Intimate depigmentation: treatment for menopause
Darkening of the skin in the intimate area in women is associated with ageing. There are minimally invasive solutions that can be used safely and effectively to treat this problem.

Genital hyperpigmentation is an alteration caused by excessive melanin formation which leads to darkening of the skin around the anal area and external genitalia.

In most cases it is associated with the natural ageing process and does not entail any functional problems. However, it can cause concern and psychological distress due to the aesthetic implications and for your sexual life.

In general, it is a multi-factor issue which can affect women at various stages of their lives. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, contraception, sun exposure, mechanical friction (wearing very tight clothing), hair removal and genetic predisposition.

An intimate depigmentation treatment can be used to remedy this problem. The purpose is to even out skin tone to achieve an improvement in or total disappearance of pigmented skin imperfections in the anogenital area, labia majora, inguinal area, pubic area, perianal skin and inner thighs.

What it is

The treatment consists in removing the more superficial layers of the skin to stimulate cell renewal by applying cosmetic creams containing functional active ingredients. These compounds have an exfoliating effect and act on the different stages of melatonin production with the aim of adding effects and acting together in the reduction and/or elimination of skin pigmentation imperfections.

A session is usually held at the clinic to renew the dermis and reversibly inhibit the production of melanin plus an at-home treatment to complete the epidermal renewal.

Laser technology or peels can also be used where necessary, although the choice of procedure will depend on each case and the medical assessment.

FAQs

Lighter skins generally have better results, but the outcome cannot be predicted in advance. Moreover, before performing the procedure the doctor has to assess whether it can be done in each case and which technique is the most appropriate.

Yes. That includes when the technique is appropriate and has been performed correctly. The most common are pain, burning, itching, superficial peeling, erythema, rashes, and hyper or hypopigmentation in the treated area.

After vaginal depigmentation, you should maintain good hygiene, avoid exposure to the sun and not wear tight-fitting clothes or use scented lotions. It is also recommended not to start taking contraceptives between genital bleaching sessions and not to do exercise immediately after the session.

If you get your period, you should keep the area as clean and dry as possible, which is why we recommend using a menstrual cup rather than sanitary towels.

It is contraindicated in case of skin problems such as irritations, wounds, eczema, abrasions, rashes, burns or scars. Also in cases of chronic diseases, cancer, vaginal infections or psoriasis.

In the 48 hours following the treatment session, you should avoid exposing the treated area directly and excessively to natural or artificial light and heat sources and also not go to saunas or swimming pools. Afterwards, use high protection factors if the skin is directly exposed.
