Botulinum toxin: what is it, and what is it for?
Botulinum toxin has been talked about for many years as one of the most effective medical active ingredients for treating dynamic or expression wrinkles, but what is botulinum toxin? Which areas can be treated? Read on to find out what it is and what it is for.

At our clinic we provide you with a wide range of cosmetic medicine treatments including the application of botulinum toxin, commonly known as “botox”. It is a substance, more specifically a neurotoxin, produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. This toxin acts by relaxing the muscle fibres in the area where it is injected and helps to control the excessive contraction of muscles that cause lines in facial expressions.

Botulinum toxin can be used in the periorbital region (crow’s feet), the glabella (between the eyebrows) and the forehead (it can be associated with slight raising of the eyebrows).

It can also be applied on the neck and neckline. Other indications for cosmetic purposes are less general and need to be assessed individually.

Applying botulinum toxin is very simple and almost painless as the needle used to inject the product is very small.

There are no restrictions on the time of year when it can be applied which means it can be done in any season.

After treatment, your skin will look much smoother, relaxed and wrinkle-free plus it will also be much more luminous.

Muscle relaxation usually lasts about four to eight months depending on the patient and the results can be appreciated gradually starting from the first week of application.

What it is

The treatment programme is chosen with an individualised diagnosis for each patient.

1 session and a touch up after 15 days for 45 minutes.

The duration of treatment varies depending on the patient’s progress.

It is a minimally invasive treatment and skin reactions disappear in a few days.

FAQs

The length of time the effects last varies depending on the individual patient. The average visibility of the treatment is about 6 months after which a booster session is needed. However, the cosmetic doctor will need to study the state of your skin before the booster session to confirm that it is feasible to apply the treatment.

During the five hours following the treatment, you should not lie down or take up postures which might cause the toxin to spread to other muscle groups.
You should not do any sport, be exposed to UV rays or saunas, or have facial massages during the following 24 hours.

In the first few days some redness and slight swelling that tightens the skin may appear, but this has nothing to do with the effect of the toxin. You have to wait about 4 days for the protein to take effect and you can appreciate the results.

Although botulinum toxin treatment is minimally invasive, there are people for whom it is contraindicated. For example, in pregnancy, breastfeeding, in patients treated with anticoagulants, people suffering from bleeding disorders, in some neuromuscular diseases and myasthenia gravis. Therefore, it is recommended to talk to the doctor before the procedure is performed.

Yes, there are no restrictions whatsoever. Each patient is assessed by the doctor who will recommend the treatments with the best outcomes, such as combining chemical peels and facial mesotherap.

No. When the effect wears off, the muscle resumes its normal activity, although the time when the toxin has been acting is time gained over facial ageing.
