In general, hypertrophy is considered to exist when the inner lips of the vulva protrude through the line of the labia majora or outer lips.
Beyond the aesthetic problem and the impact on self-esteem, hypertrophy of labia minora can also affect quality of life, as it causes discomfort and friction, irritation or problems with local hygiene, recurring vaginal infections, discomfort during sex due to friction, and the practice of some sports such as horse riding or cycling, these being the main reasons for consulting.
If the patient wishes to treat hypertrophy, a labiaplasty may be performed. To approach this procedure correctly, it is essential to perform a physical examination, as often hypertrophy of labia minora can be associated with lengthening of tissues in other areas of the vulva such as the hood of the clitoris, vestibule and perianal region. It is also essential to know the patient’s medical history, symptoms, and concerns and interests, in order to offer the best solution in each case.

What is the difference between a laser labiaplasty and a traditional labiaplasty?
Laser use offers better results and a better post-operative period. Laser-operated patients also experience less pain. Therefore, they require fewer painkillers and need a shorter rest period.
What are the complications of this procedure at local level?
Any procedure performed may have complications, including inflammation, bruising, pain, infection, dehiscence, lymphoedema, hypersensitivity, altered scarring, retractions, unsatisfactory aesthetic results or the need to reoperate.
Are the results immediate?
The best thing is to assess the results from 12 weeks after the procedure, since at this stage the initial inflammation process will have improved, and we will have complete healing. That being said, the final results should be considered 6 months after the procedure.
What subsequent care is recommended?
A local cold application and painkiller plan will be established in the post-operative period. An oral and topical (to be applied on the wound) antibiotic treatment may also be considered. You can have showers as normal, but the use of the bidet and hot water is contraindicated, since it can increase the vascularisation of the area and the risk of bleeding.
Can local sensitivity decrease?
This is one of the patients’ greatest fears when undergoing the procedure, but if it is carried out with expert people it does not affect sensitivity. There may be a transient hypersensitivity reaction between 2 weeks and 3 months after the procedure. It has been shown that, after undergoing this procedure, patients experience an increase in the frequency with which they have sex by 44%.
Are there any risks that surgery or laser treatment may affect the clitoris or orgasms?
No. For that matter: often, when you have a labiaplasty, we must treat the clitoris or its hood, and if there are no complications, sensitivity is preserved in all cases with good sexual and orgasmic satisfaction.
When can sexual relations be reinitiated, if any treatment is performed?
Depending on the surgical technique and the healing process, it is advisable to wait between 4 and 6 weeks before starting to have sexual relations again.
Can it happen as a result of masturbation?
There is no solid evidence that masturbation can cause hypertrophy of labia minora, so it is considered rather a myth than a reality, from a medical point of view.
