Premenopause

It begins at the time when women start to gradually lose their ovarian function. It occurs from a woman’s 40s onwards. It can last several years and varies from woman to woman.

It is a stage marked by changes in menstruation: you may have periods every 2-3 months, times without periods and others with periods. It can last from 1 to 3 years and you may experience some vasomotor symptoms due to hormonal deficiency, such as hot flushes.

Menopause is the stage in a woman’s life when the ovaries stop producing eggs. Menstrual periods and reproductive capacity come to an end.

Postmenopause is the stage after menopause and starts a year after the last menstruation. It lasts about 15 years and continues into old age.

Primary ovarian failure occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop working normally before the age of 40. In many cases the cause is unknown, although it may be the result of cancer treatment or surgery.

Vulvovaginal atrophy

This is a physiological process associated with menopause, which can also occur after receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy to treat cancer, surgery to remove the ovaries or premature ovarian failure.

Recurrent candidiasis

Hormonal changes that occur during menopause affect the pH and the vaginal mucosa. These alterations can affect the microbiota in that area and increase susceptibility to suffering infections recurrently. One of the most common is candidiasis.

Gynaecological scars

Scars from episiotomies, surgeries or C-sections can cause itching, pain or tightness. And some that did not bother us before can cause discomfort during menopause. The reason is the oestrogen deficit, which affects tissue elasticity and vascularisation, which can increase local tension and sensitivity.

Vaginal hyperlaxity

This consists of a decrease in tension in the vaginal walls. It is often associated with the decrease in collagen over the years or procedures that cause tissue strain, such as vaginal births. When vaginal tone decreases, the diameter of the vagina is enlarged, and it loses firmness and elasticity.

Intimate area hyperpigmentation

Darkening of the intimate areas in women is a fairly common occurrence. In most cases, it is not linked to any particular pathology. However, it can cause concern about body image or have a negative impact on sex life at a psychological level.

Hypertrophy of labia minora

Hypertrophy of labia minora may be caused by several factors. Firstly, it can be considered an anatomical variant, since no vulva is the same, although its origin is sometimes genetic. It can also be caused by the administration of androgens during pregnancy, chronic irritation, postpartum, or the local use of piercings.

Recurrent urinary infections

During menopause, the decrease in oestrogen levels causes changes that can increase the risk of urinary tract infections. And if they are not treated or cured well, they can become recurrent.

Vulvar lichen

Vulvar lichen is a skin condition that usually affects the area of external genitals and sometimes also the perianal region. It may appear at any age, although menopause is more common.

Osteoporosis

35% of women over 50 years of age have osteoporosis, a percentage that exceeds 50% in those over 70 years of age. This disease is characterised by a decrease in bone mineral density, which causes greater bone fragility and a greater propensity to suffer fractures, and it is therefore essential to carry out preliminary check-ups to strengthen it.

Urinary incontinence

This problem can occur after pregnancy and childbirth, in women who practice high-impact sports, or during menopause. The cause is a loss of muscle tone of the pelvic floor.

Find out more and take care of your well-being at all stages of menopause.

Menopause is a natural biological process that usually begins after 40 years of age. It usually begins with changes in the menstrual cycle during perimenopause, and the process ends when the ovaries stop producing eggs and the woman definitively enters into menopause, after 12 months without menstruation. This process causes a major change in the hormonal regulation of women that can trigger all types of symptoms.
Urinary incontinence is a major health problem. It affects 20% of women between 35 and 65 years of age. A percentage that, from 75 onwards, exceeds 40%.
At first glance, the name may surprise you, but it is not a fungus or related to the vaginal microbiota. Vulvar lichen is a skin condition that usually affects the genital area.
