Female fertility study

Why do it

A fertility study will detect or rule out any problems preventing conception and the possibility of giving birth to a healthy baby. This information will help you to decide which steps to take in each case, ruling out uncertainties and ensuring that you don’t have to wait longer.

More common than you think

Infertility affects 15% of couples. In 30% of cases, the cause is of female origin and in another 30% it is mixed, i.e. the origin of the problem lies in both.

What does it involve?

The tests vary according to the individual but generally include an initial medical visit and various physical examinations and diagnostic tests:

1. Medical visit:
with a specialist to find out relevant personal details: age, lifestyle, medical history, family history, etc.

2. Diagnostic testing:

  • Blood test anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH).
  • Gynaecological ultrasound: to detect possible diseases of the reproductive system (malformations, polyps, fibroids, cysts, etc.) and find out the ovarian reserve by counting antral follicles (structures containing eggs that have not yet matured).

3. Diagnostic, results and possible treatments (2 visits).

Other tests

  • Cervical screening and complete physical exam (breast exam and pelvic exam): done only if the patient has not had a gynaecological check-up within the past year with a cervical screening (the results of which she will need to provide).
  • Hysterosalpingography / Hysterosalpingosonography: find out the status of the uterine cavity and determine whether the fallopian tubes could be blocked.
  • Diagnostic hysteroscopy: internal examination of the uterus using an optical camera. It is performed on an outpatient basis in the doctor’s surgery.

When is it advised

  • Any woman who wants to know her chances of becoming a mother and rule out possible problems.
  • Couples who have been trying to get pregnant without success for more than twelve months (or six months if the woman is over 35 years old). In this case, the couples fertility study is also indicated.
  • Women without a partner who want to have a child through assisted reproduction techniques.
  • Lesbian couples who wish to conceive.
  • Women with a family history of fertility problems, chronic diseases such as endometriosis that can affect reproductive capacity, or those who have had to undergo radiation or chemotherapy treatments for cancer.
